Tribune Co., they own the Chicago Tribune and the Los Angeles Times as well as the Chicago Cubs and Wrigley Field, filed for Chapter 11bankruptcy protection on Dec. 8.

Aloha Airlines made its last passenger flight on March 31, and shuttered operations.

Sharper Image Corp filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection on Feb. 19.

Advantage Rent a Car made the announcement on Dec. 8. The company will close about 40 percent of its locations.

Bally Total Fitness has filed for bankruptcy protection, for the second time in 2 years.
The latest announcement was Dec. 3.

Pilgrim's Pride, the largest U.S. chicken producer, weighed down by a sagging debt load, and affected by volatile feed prices, filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection on Dec. 1.

Home electronics retailer Tweeter, began to liquidate its stores in early December.

On Dec. 1, Hawaiian Telcom Communications Inc., the largest telephone company on the Hawaiian islands, filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection.

On Nov. 21, Boca Raton-based DayJet Corp., grounded its planes and filed for Chapter 7 bankruptcy.

Circuit City, filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection on Nov. 10.

Mattress Discounters, closed 48 stores and filed for Chapter 11 protection.

Bennigan's restaurant , filed for Chapter 7 bankruptcy protection and closed 150 of it's company-owned stores.

Steve & Barry's, the new owners said that they would liquidate the company's remaining 173 stores.

Lehman Brothers filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection in September after the U.S. government refused to rescue it. It was the largest bankruptcy filing in U.S. history.

Washington Mutual filed for bankruptcy protection after selling its banking operations to JPMorgan Chase. The biggest bank failure in U.S. history.

Linens 'n Things filed for bankruptcy in May.

Skybus Airlines filed for bankruptcy in April, then shut down operations, affecting 350 employees in Columbus, Ohio.

Frontier Airlines, a discount carrier based in Denver, filed for bankruptcy on April 11.
ATA Airlines, lost a major contract for its military charter business forced the airline into bankruptcy in April.

Lillian Vernon, catalog retailer, filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection in February.

Tropicana Entertainment, not sure if Nevada property is open?

Progressive Auto Parts, filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection in June.

Hard Rock Park, Myrtle Beach, SC amusement park may not re-open for the 2009 season.

Polaroid, announced it was filing for Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection on December 18.

KB Toys, filed for Chapter 11 protection again on December 11, and started liquidating all of its remaining stores.

Lorain County’s Midway Mall in a free fall over the economy. Already closed are; Steve and Barry’s, Lonestar Steakhouse, Bennigans and FRIDAYS.

According to today’s Morning Journal, five stores are set to close by next month.
Dairy Queen will close on Jan. 25. Hallmark and Pac Sun will also be closing this month. New York & Company will close at the beginning of next month.
The name of the fifth store is unknown.

Janesville Acoustics (Norwalk) laid off 91 of its 241 full-time employees Monday…indefinitely. Janesville produces thermal and acoustical products for the auto industry.

Norwalk/Milan has been particularly hard during the “down-turn” in the economy.
Tenneco Automotive announced in October it was relocating its elastomer mixing operations from Milan to the company’s facility in Reynosa, Mexico, affecting 95 employees.
Norwalk Furniture, the area’s second largest employer, crumbled under the credit crisis, permanently laying off 400 folks.

Phillips-Van Heusen Corp., which owns the Calvin Klein, Izod and Van Heusen clothing brands, will close 175 stores and lay off 400 employees due to the recession.

Harley-Davidson Inc. will cut 1,100jobs, close some facilities and consolidate others.

It's still the economy...

On Dec. 22, Flying J, a privately held oil producer, refiner and pipeline operator, filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection, citing weak oil prices and turmoil in the credit markets.

Tweeter filed for Chapter 11 in 2007 but in early December, the company coverted its case to a Chapter 7 filing and began to liquidate its stores.


Tennessee-based Goody's, which just emerged from bankruptcy protection in October, announced Jan. 14 that it was again filing for Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection.

Nortel Networks announced Jan. 14 that it filed for bankruptcy.

Classic china and crystal maker Waterford Wedgwood has filed for bankruptcy after attempts to restructure the company or find a buyer failed.

Less than a week after warning that bankruptcy was an option, the U.S. arm of chemical giant LyondellBasell Industries has filed for Chapter 11.

Black Angus Steakhouse chain filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection Jan. 15.

Minnesota's largest newspaper, the Star Tribune announced Jan. 15 that it filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection.

Cardboard box materials producer Smurfit-Stone announced Jan. 26 that it filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection as it struggles to repay debt.

Spectrum Brands, (Rayovac batteries and Remington razors), announced Feb. 3 that it filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection.

Housewares/jewelry retailer Fortunoff files for bankruptcy for the SECOND time in a year.

Fisher & Paykel in Clyde will shutter its washing machine line and move its dryer line to Mexico, laying off about 60 employees.
